Renewals

Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate (MDs and DOs)

Initial ACSC applications are provided to physicians after their license applications are complete and certificates of qualification are issued.
ACSCs are renewed annually beginning in October. All ACSCs expire on December 31 of each year.
There is no "grace period" for renewing an ACSC. ACSC holders will be sent a notification in October with the procedure for renewal.

Qualified Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate (PAs)

Physician Assistants may apply for a Qualified Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate conferring prescriptive privileges in Schedules III, IV and V.
QACSCs are renewed annually and expire on December 31 of each year.
Application forms are sent to P.A.s upon their initial licensure and registration.

QACSC holders must also register with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Renewals

ACSCs and QACSCs expire on December 31 of each year
There is no grace period for renewing the ACSC/QACSC
Renewal notices are sent out along with license renewal notices in October of each year

To reinstate an inactive ACSC, please use the online ACSC reinstatement application request

DEA registration

Both an ACSC/QACSC and a DEA registration are required to order, dispense, prescribe or otherwise distribute controlled substances.
DEA registrations are issued by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
